New Cyrus Products |
|
|
Cyrus has been busy not only developing a new CD player, but indeed new ways to read CD's in the first place! What they have produced has been titled the Servo Evolution models, or 'SE' for short, which in many ways rewrites the rule book on CD player design. Unlike the majority of CD players on the market that use off the shelf drive mechanisms, Cyrus has decided that building one from scratch to exacting specifications yields much better results. Less errors and better transmission of the digital data with the player itself ultimately leads to better performance... and what a performance! The new CD6se, CD8se and CDXTse (transport) are comparable with the best players available today and have to be heard to be believed - on demonstration now! Available in brushed black and quartz silver.

New Spendor Models |
|
|
| Spendor has long been regarded as one of the finest speaker manufactures operating in the UK and their new range of speakers only seeks to confirm this position. Following on from the unprecedented Spendor SA1 signature stand-mount speaker in it's striking high gloss 'zebrano' finish, the new 'A' line series is set to replace the highly regarded 'S' series and we at PJ are proud to be amongst the very first to have heard these fantastic speakers. The A5 is a compact floor standing design with a twin mid / bass driver assembly to enhance performance whilst retaining the slim dimensions of the unit. Its bigger brother the A6 trades this against a much larger, single mid / bass driver in a taller and wider cabinet with a far simpler crossover design. The results are fantastic and will no doubt win the hearts of all those who listen to them - these superb speakers finally combine Spendor's trademark lucid midrange with a healthy dose of dynamics and rhythm; taking the Spendor sound to new levels. On demonstration now!

| Leema Acoustics... |
PJ hi-fi is delighted to announce that we have established a working relationship with Leema Acoustics following a series of great reviews and word of mouth on AV Talk's forum. Leema contacted us after a reader expressed interest in an audition in our area, a request that I was more than happy to fulfil!

The speaker in question is the Xen monitor, standing at just 10" tall and only 5" wide it is a true miniature speaker designed for wall mount or fits nicely on the Mission Stance stand. Whilst the sides and top are steel with the head of a torque rod visible on both sides the front is a baffle made from a choice of woods and held by a series of bolt heads that add to the industrial look befitting a studio style monitor. Two tiny ports sit astride the soft dome tweeter and above bass unit although these are filled with a rock wool type material to control air flow. |
The performance is something to behold, not just because it's easy to be impressed with a tiny speaker purely because of the big sound relative to its tiny proportions, but because of the staggering control, speed and exceptional timing that such good engineering brings. It has always been true that a small speaker can achieve greater clarity and precision because of the freedom from unnecessary resonance and vibration a large cabinet would impart to the sound, and subsequently distort the music but here is the perfect example of this philosophy. Needless to say a large scale room filling sound is not what's on offer but if your taste is for a fast, agile and crystal clear sound in a small room then I'd like to hear anything more entertaining and musically involving. It's necessary to install a good amplifier to get them to reveal their strengths so I had a go with a Naim Nait as well as offerings from Cyrus and Musical Fidelity. All good amps with plenty of drive enough to get the little Xens to sing out loud.
The recent reviews concentrated on the AV side of their ability by combining the matched centre and subwoofer to two pairs of Xens and this is an area where a mini speaker can really come into its own as this is an area where small is beautiful!
Call for a demo and hear them for yourself! |
