Sony 2020 Launch Event

Book your slot here: Sony 4k Projector Launch

While some projector manufacturers are still using pixel mirroring techniques to create a 4k image from their units, Sony have just released a new generation of native 4K projectors to replace their already very popular range. Having been producing native 4k projectors for going on a decade now this new range further cements a claim to Sony being leaders in the field.

The new range will be topped by the VPL-GTZ380 (not available until January) which will feature a newly developed SXRD panel and new laser light source. This will feature a red laser diode alongside two different wavelength blue laser diodes leading to an incredible 10,000 lumens. This flagship projector will be priced at £79,999.

The other new models in question are the lamp based VPL-VW590 and laser VPL-VW790, replacing the outgoing VPL-VW570 and VPL-VW760 respectively. Perhaps the most impressive part of this product launch and certainly most welcome from a consumer point of view is that the new models undercut the old in price! With the VPL-VW590 coming in at £6,999 and the VPL-VW790 at £11,999. This represents an effective price reduction of £1,000 and £3,000 over the previous models.

Lumens clock in at 1,800 for the VPL-VW590 (above) while the VPL-VW790 (below) will be high as 2,000 and also with the benefit of 20,000 hour lifespan. All three models also feature HDMI 2.0b allowing 4k 60fps playback.

Never ones to miss out on seeing how good a picture 4k projectors can produce (see our Sony JVC shootout last September) PJ HiFi will have the new models in store, on demonstration from Tuesday the 29th of September. Given that 4k projection has just become more affordable, and with the nights drawing in, it could well be worth your while coming down to store next Tuesday.
